The Chief's Coat of Arms

These arms are the personal property of George MacMillan.
They are not the arms or insignia of Clan MacMillan or of any other member of the clan.
Indeed, it is an offence under Scottish law for clanspeople, or anyone else, to use or display them as if they were their own.

The crest of these arms - the wielded two-handed sword - enclosed in a buckled belt
can however be used by clanspeople to demonstrate their loyalty to the chief as members of his clan (as illustrated above left).

The Latin motto at the top of the chief's arms - "Miseris Succurrere Disco" (I Learn to Help the Needy) - which comes from Virgil,
is used as the Clan Motto; while the Gaelic phrase at the bottom of the chief's arms refers to the inscription said to have been carved on a rock
on the seashore at the point of Knap as MacMillan's charter for his lands. It is the second line of the following couplet:
MacMillan's right to Knap shall be / So long's this rock withstands the sea.
