The Macmillans of Murlagan and of Glenpean
Tradition has it that the ancestor of the chiefs of Clann 'ic 'illemhaoil Abrach was a son of MacMillan of Knap who fled to Lochaber after killing an important stranger in Knapdale. No date is attached to this legend, and no name is given to the Macmillan concerned. One can speculate however that such an incident may well have happened when the Campbells moved into Knapdale and faced a series of rebellions involving the native MacMillans in support of the deposed MacDonald Lords of the Isles - i.e. from the end of the 15th to the middle of the 16th century. Whenever and however the ancestor of the Macmillans of Murlagan and Glenpean first became established on Loch Arkaigside the family can be traced there from the mid-16th century down to 1717, and then from 1746 to the great emigration of 1802.
