First Generation
1. Malcolm M'millan [006] was born about 1716
in Mull of Kintyre, SCT. He died in 1805 in Cumberland Co., NC, USA.
He Emig. to NC, USA in 1774.
Malcolm M'millan's eldest known son John is said to have been born 14 miles
south of Campbeltown, and although this would put Malcolm's home in the sea,
we may reasonably conclude that he therefore lived in the parish of Southend.
The surviving OPR for Southend only starts in 1768 so none of the known sons
of Malcolm M'millan & Catherine M'arthur appear in it. There is one reference
only to a Malcolm M'millan in the OPR between 1768 and 1774 (when he emigrated)
and that is the birth/baptism of a Dugald McMillan on 3 June 1768. Unfortunately
this Dugald's mother is not named so it's impossible to say if this is the relevant
Malcolm M'millan; but if it was he lived at a place - so far not identified -
called "Corrylach".
Malcolm M'millan, his wife Catherine M'arthur, and their sons Daniel, Archibald
& Gilbert emigrated from Greenock on 22 Aug. 1774 on the "Ulysses".
They had sailed with the following families: Iver M'millan (26) & his wife
Jean Huie (20); Malcolm Smith (64) & his wife Mary M'alester (64) plus their
children Peter (23) & Mary (19); Peter M'arthur (58) & his wife Christine
Bride (52) plus their children John (16), Ann (18), Jean (20), and John M'arthur
(28).
The "Ulysses" arrived at Wilmington, NC, from whence Malcom M'millan
& family travelled up the Cape Fear River to settle in Cumberland County,
NC, near his sons John and Malcolm who had emigrated earlier in the year 1774.
Malcolm's date of death based on probate of will in 1805.
The tree at the beginning of Robert H. M'millan's "Record of McMillan and
Allied Families" - which is the source for this branch of the clan - shows
Malcolm as the son of John who, with his brothers Archibald, Duncan and Gilbert
("All tenants in the Mull"), is the son of Duncan ("Tenant")
son of John ("Tenant in 1678") son of Malcolm son of John ("Land
Officer in 1639") son of Malcolm ("Tenant in 1605") son of Duncan
("Tenant in 1541") son of Neil/Nigellus ("1505 in Mull of Kintyre")
son of Alexander of the Cross.
This descent appears to be based on Somerled MacMillan's "MacMillan
Tenants in Kintyre from 1505 to 1859" in CLAN MACMILLAN MAGAZINE OF NORTH
AMERICA, Vol.1, No.1, July 1958 - "Mull of Kintyre Branch" pages 10-12
(though details do not entirely correspond). Malcolm
M'millan [006] and Catherine M'arthur had the following children:
