DEATH: Copy of the funeral service given to me by (his cousin) Davida Hastie
on 4-1-01. She said this was left on the pulpit from which Rev. Roe Callaway
spoke during the funeral:
" As a logger, Bill left his mark throughout the swamps and woodlands of
this part of the world. As a County Commissioner and as a concerned and involved
citizen, Bill left his mark on the growth, expansion, and politics of Baldwin
County. As a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he will never
be forgotten. As an Elder and as a "mover and shaker" in the Stockton
Presbyterian Church, he will long be remembered. He was a giant- a big man with
an equaly big heart.
In the Presbyterian Church there is a phrase that over the years has become
somewhat synonymous with the denomination itself: "done decently and in
order". If there was ever anyone who wanted to see things- all things- done
"right", Bill McMillan fit this description to a tee. He expected the
best- in all things- large or small. That is to say, he expected everyone to
do their best in whatever task they were assigned.
Beneath his "Lion's Roar" there was a tender side to Bill. A side
that wanted the best for those he loved. Family was important to him. Each and
every member of his family was very dear to him. Leola, Tom, Linda, Bob, their
children and their children's children were sources of great joy and affection
to Bill. Below the seemingly tough and crusty surface of this good man there
beat a heart that dearly loved his devoted wife, and glorified in the treasures
of those he cherished. Bill McMillan was a lover: he loved Leola, he loved Tom,
Linda and Bob. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved God,
and He loved this church. He chaired the committee that built this very sanctuary!
Bill was my friend! And a friend to countless thousands of others. He shall be
missed." -Rev Dr Roe Calloway Febuary 12, 2001 Cpl. Archie Malcolm (Big
