Second Generation
2. Hugh M'millan
[039]1 was born on
18 Feb 1720 in Inveresk, ML, SCT.1
Since some sources suggest Hugh was born in NIR rather than Scotland there must
be a question as to whether the Hugh M'millan born to John and Marion Bairnsfather
is the same Hugh M'millan who was married to Mabel Crawford. He died UNKNOWN
in Antrim, NIR, or maybe London, ENG (?).1
Said to have had a second wife.1
Minister and/or Paisley Weaver
THE SOURCES USED - AS MENTIONED BELOW - DO NOT ALWAYS AGREE ON DETAILS OF THE
FAMILY AND DESCENDANTS OF THIS HUGH M'MILLAN; SO NOT ALL LISTED CHILDREN MAY
BELONG TO HIM.
HMFRA: "The Hugh McMillan Family of Rasharkin, Antrim, Ireland"
by Sybile Pierce, Sumter Co., SC - copy in US/SC Gen. File in Clan Centre - is
the most complete source, but is itself a compilation using some of the other
sources mentioned.
DHMU: Descendants of Hugh McMillan from Ulster - previous Project MAOL file
compiled from various sources.
CM1750-1951: "The Clan MacMillan 1750-1951" - booklet compiled
by descendants in SC (copy in Clan Centre).
DMHG: "Daniel McMillan History and Genealogy" (called by Sybile
Pierce "The Daniel McMillan Book") - photocopied extracts in Clan Centre.
The name Hugh for the progenitor of the family appears to come from DMHG - i.e.
the descendants of his son Daniel - while the descendants of his son Hugh are
said to have no memory of his name, according to CM1750-1951.
Sybile Pierce also cites the following work: "Jennings, McMillans,
Whaleys, Bluer & Other Early SC Families" by Carnice Jennings Groves
(copy in Orangeburg Free Library, Orangeburg, SC).
Sybile Pierce appears to say that DMHG is the source for this Hugh's marriage
to Mabel Crawford, who she says was born in 1724 in Antrim. She does not state
that this Hugh was an Ref. Pres. Ch. minister but reports that his father - who
she says was also called Hugh - may have been.
Sybile Pierce states that this Hugh was born in Rasharkin, Co. Antrim, Northern
Ireland; but other sources say he may have been born in Scotland. It's possible
that the birth in Scotland could refer to his father if he was also, as is sometimes
said, called Hugh.
Family traditions refer to flight from Scotland to avoid religious persecution.
The dates would suggest that this might refer to Hugh's father, especially if
he too was a minister in the Ref. Pres. Church. If, as appears perhaps to have
been the case, this Hugh has been confused with his father in relation to his
birthplace, we should beware of automatically assuming that the father's name
was also Hugh. Mabel Crawford was born about 1724
in Antrim, NIR. Hugh M'millan [039] and Mabel Crawford had the following
children:
