1. Rev. John ("of Balmaghie") M'millan [044]1 was born about 1675 in Minnigaff, Galloway, SCT. He died on 20 Nov 1753 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, SCT. Founder Ref. Presb. Ch.
Rev. John's birthdate depends on monument in Dalserf, which also says that he was born at Barncauchlaw. Tradition asserts that his father was a John M'millan who is said to have fallen at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge (with a brother who was martyred at Ayr after Battle of Pentland).
Rev. John's biographer (see below) thinks however that he may have been born in Glenhead, Minnigaff, in 1682 to a father called Alexander M'millan (see sources listed below).
Career: MA Edinburgh 28 June 1697. Licensed by Presbytery of Kirkcudbright in 1700, and called and ordained to Balmaghie in 1701. Deposed by Church of Scotland in 1703, but remained in possession of manse until he moved voluntarily to Lanarkshire in 1727. Accepted pastorate of United Societies in 1706. Founded Reformed Presbyterian Church with Rev. Thomas Nairn (from Abbotshall, Fife) in 1743 at meeting in Carnwath.
First wife Jean Gemmell, married 1708 in Carsphairn (?), died 1711. Second wife Mary Gordon, daughter of Sir Alexander Gordon Bt. of Earlston), married 1719, died in childbirth 1723 (child not known to have survived). Third wife Grace Russell or Janet Jackson.
Rev. John died at Broomhill, Bothwell, and buried at Dalserf.

Additional information about some of Rev. John's children comes from pages of a family bible in the hands of Mrs. George Ward, Bere Regis, Dorset, whose gt. gt. grandmother was a Margaret McMillan - assumed, but not proven, to be a descendant of Rev. John's son Rev. John McMillan II.

Rev. John ("of Balmaghie") M'millan [044] and Jean Gemble were married estimated 1695. Jean Gemble was born about 1673 in SCT. She died in 1711.

Rev. John ("of Balmaghie") M'millan [044] and Mary Gordon were married estimated 1715. Mary Gordon was born about 1680. She died on 5 May 1723 in Balmaghie ?, Galloway, SCT. Dau of Sir Alexander of Earlston, Bt.

Rev. John ("of Balmaghie") M'millan [044] and Grace Russell were married about 1725 in Galloway ?, SCT. Rev. John ("of Balmaghie") M'millan [044] and Grace Russell had the following children:

Josias M'millan [044] was born on 12 Jun 1726 in Balmaghie, Galloway, SCT. He died on 7 Feb 1740 in Dalserf, Lanark, SCT.
