CLAN NEWS
Alexander Ross Macmillan (Glasgow, Scotland) has intimated his intention to resign from the Clan Centre's Board of Trustees. Alick, a onetime CEO of the Clydesdale (one of Scotland's three major banks), served for many year's as the Centre's first Treasurer, and remained an active Trustee after handing over the Centre's financial reins to Brig. Alistair Macmillan. Although he is recovering well from a sojurn in hospital last year, Alick has decided that at the age of 81 he's done his stint for the Clan, and in wishing him well for the future we also thank him for for all his hard work over the years for the Centre, and look forward to seeing him in a non-executive capacity at future clan events.
William Donald Macmillan (Forres, Scotland), a founder member and the second Chairman of the Glenurquhart Macmillan Society has died at the age of 83. Willie Donald was a meteorologist and worked for many years with the airforce at RAF Kinloss (to the east of Inverness on the Moray Firth). He was amongst the keenest supporters of the clan and will be sorely missed by his cousins and friends in the Glenurquhart Society. We extend our deepest condolences to his widow Rosa, his son Donald, and his daughter Kathleen.
Julia Mulliken Batchelor (Nashville, NC, USA) has been appointed Liason Officer for the Clan Centre in the Appalachian Branch of Clan MacMillan. Julia was inspired to become more active in the clan by her visit to Scotland for the Conclave and Chiefly Birthday Bash in the summer of 2000 when she was able to visit the region of Galloway where her ancestors came from in the 17th century. She has been kind enough to supply a considerable amount of material to the Clan Centre about the sept of Milliken/Mulligan - which derives from Ap Maolagain, the British-Welsh version of the name Mac Mhaolagain (a diminutive form of MacMillan - i.e. meaning "son of the little tonsured one"). Julia has also recently created the Appalachian Branch's website at http://geocities.com/cytotechnologist101/AppBranch_MacMillan.html
Glengarry & Ottawa Valley Branch in Canada were planning to attend the Brockville Celtic Festival on 6-8 June this year for the first time. On 3rd August at St. Raphaels they'll be unveiling a replica of the plaque they put up last year on the Memorial Wall at Finlaystone in memory of the 1802 emigrants from Lochaber. For further details please see their website, whose address has now changed to http://www3.sympatico.ca/comflex/mcmillan/
Clan MacMillan Pacific Branch elected the following new officers at their recent AGM: President, Ronald Mullins (El Cajon, CA); Vice President, Fred Young (Alpine, CA); Treasurer, Kathleen Noble (San Marcos, CA). The branch's Ambassador, Connall Bell, was at large recently in Glasgow KY with his wife Patricia, where he was sporting the latest splendid addition to his extensive Highland wardrobe, in the shape of a Dress MacMillan kilt. The recent resurgence of interest in the Dress MacMillan tartan - which owes much to Lamar McMillin's patronage of it - adds even more brilliance to the MacMillans' already pretty psychedelic choice of clan colours.
Liz MacMillan Miller, daughter of Father Mac and sister of Rev. David MacMillan, was ordained as a Deacon of the Episcopal Church on 31st May 2003. The congratulations and good wishes of all in the clan go with her in her new role.
Phil McMillan (UT, USA), Clan Centre Trustee, was honoured in the 2002 US Air Force Civil Engineer Awards with The Society of American Military Engineers Technology Advancement Medal which he tells us was awarded "for the advancement of current and future technology in the field of aviation technology and engineering". Phil will be taking his award-winning skills to Germany in July where he's just been appointed Chief of Operations at Ramstein Airbase for a tour of minimum 3 years. Ramstein is part of the KMC Kaiserslautern Military Community, located west of Hiedlberg, which, with over 90,000 personnel, is the largest American community in the world outside the US. Since Germany is a lot closer to Scotland than Utah we hope this means we'll be seing a bit more of Phil at Finlaystone in the months to come.

Murray
Brown (Langbank, Scotland) - pictured left - son of Clan Centre
Trustee David Brown, won gold last year in the under-13 shot putt in the
Scottish Championships at Grangemouth. He also claimed third place in the
discus. With his help, the boys' team of Kilbarchan Amateur Athletic Club
won the Scottish section of the Young Athletes League. At the UK finals in
Birmingham Murray again struck gold in the shot putt, with a performance
which earned him Athlete of the Match for field events. He is looking
forward to the new season when he'll try his skills with the javelin and
throwing the hammer. Murray attends Gryffe High School and has regularly
attended the Burns Suppers and Scottish Nights organised by the Scottish
Society of the Clan and has recited the Selkirk Grace at Finlaystone.
Robert Bell, President of the Appalachian Branch, has sent us a fascinating account of the adventures of one Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky (1828-68), the son of a Polish colonel in the Prussian army who married Emelia Bell, daughter of James Stanislaus Bell, the British Superintendent on the Mosquito Coast of Central America (brother of Robert's great-great-grandfather William Henry Bell). Von Tempsky and his wife moved to New Zealand where he took a leading part in the Waikato War in the 1860s during which he was killed. William Henry and James Stanislaus Bell were uncles to Arthur Bell who gave his name to the famous Bells Whisky in Scotland.
Clan MacMillan Society of New Zealand have three new officers to assist founder, president, and long-time lone officer Margaret Pool in spreading the word amongst the many M'millans in the Land of the Long White Cloud: The Vice President is Avon McMillan from Pakuranga, Auckland; the Secretary is Rob McMillan, Mt.Roskill, Auckland; and the Treasurer is Sylvia MacMillan, Manurewa, South Auckland. The New Zealand MacMillans have been chosen as the "Host Clan" for the 133rd Waipu Highland Games to be held on 1st January 2004.
Lamar McMillan (MS, USA) was in New Zealand this New Year for the 132nd Waipu Games, which had a special celebration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival there of Rev. Norman Macleod's emigrants from Nova Scotia - who were originally from the Scottish Hebrides. A brief account by Margaret Pool of this enjoyable and very successful occasion can be found on the website at www.clanmacmillan.org/News/News.htm.
Clan MacMillan Society of Australia had a busy month earlier this year attending Highland Games at both Geelong (16 March) and Ringwood (30 March). Their AGM is to be held on the 12th Oct. in South Yara, Victoria. Clan MacMillan Society of North America are looking forward to welcoming Chief George and his wife Jane to their 45th Anniversary International Gathering in New York between 12 & 17 August, which will be centered at the Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan. For further details see www.clanmacmillan.org/News/News.htm
Glenurquhart Macmillan Society will hold their AGM at 11.00am in the Glenurquhart House Hotel on the morning of 30th August, with coffee before and lunch afterwards. The previous evening will see a tour of beautiful and historic Glen Urquhart - on the shores of Loch Ness - to be followed by dinner in an excellent restaurant in neighbouring Strathglass (Chisholm country!). M'millans of all other branches are welcome to attend - contact Hazel Macmillan Murie on 01382-580038 or email David.Murie@virgin.net
North & Central States Branch of Clan MacMillan made its first foray into Wisconsin on 7th June to set up their tent at the Milwaukee Highland Games - where they were joined by Clan Centre curator Graeme Mackenzie who was staying in Chicago at the time with Paul and Jenny Kate McMullan (originally from MS, USA) following his third visit, the previous weekend, to perform at the Glasgow Highland Games in Kentucky. Mike McMillen and Neil Johnson who had driven from Minneapolis MN, were pleased to meet a number of clanspeople from Wisconsin and nearby Illinois, a couple of whom volunteered their services for future clan events in their areas. Mike reported that the branch's second visit to the Macalester College Scottish Country Fair in St. Pauls MN on the 3rd May had also been a great success, so the future looks good for Clan MacMillan's newest branch. For pictures of their activities see their website at www.mcmillen-design.com/clan/

Scotland,
and providing educational materials and events for
Clan MacMillan and Sept members around the world.
Tribute
Fund
The Trustees of the Clan MacMillan International Centre (CMIC)
have asked CTS to take the lead in fundraising for CMIC. Glenn O.
MacMillen, who has considerable experience in fundraising, has been
working hard to put together a Tribute Fund which will honour Rev. Canon
A. Malcolm MacMillan, Abbot Emeritus and Founder of the Community of the
Tonsured Servant, and his deceased wife Sally (Mark) MacMillan. This
endowment fund is designed to recognize Father Mac and Sally and say
thanks to them for all they have done to make a difference in the world.
The fund will insure that the philosophies, goals and aspirations of
Father Mac and Sally will continue on, encouraging interest in our
Scottish heritage. It would be very meaningful to Father Mac to have your
name on the list of friends.
Mac & Sally in 1995

New
Web Site and Newsletter for CTS
One of our new CTS members who was invested at Iona Abbey, Isle of Iona,
Scotland, has enthusiastically volunteered to set up a web site for CTS
members. Adhania MacMullen Olson of Carnation, WA, USA proposes a site
where CTS members can "talk" to each other, store documents
about the history and organization of CTS, send photos, post Gathering
information, exchange e-mails and just generally get to know each other.
Watch for more information in the new CTS newsletter to be published by
Blanche McMillan soon. Our thanks to Adhania for her patience, know-how
and enthusiasm as we begin this new adventure together.
Liberty
