Clan MacMillan Branches and Societies
The first voluntary body representing this
ancient name was The Clan MacMillan Society, which was formed in Glasgow
in 1892. Since there was no recognised hereditary chief of the clan at that time
the elected presiding officer of the society was called the "Chief".
Following the recognition of Sir Gordon MacMillan as the clan's hereditary chief
in 1951 the society's presiding officer became it's President. The worldwide
upsurge of interest in the clan following the discovery of it's hereditary chief
led to the formation of the Clan MacMillan Society of North America
in 1958 - which brought together a number of existing regional and family groups
in the USA and Canada, and encouraged the founding of many more in the
succeeding decades.
The Clan
MacMillan Society of Australia was founded in 1982, and the Clan
MacMillan Society of New Zealand in 1991. The creation of the Clan MacMillan
Centre, also in 1991, led to the founding of the Friends of the Clan Centre
in 1993. This body, with it's worldwide membership, became Clan MacMillan
International in 2000; and Clan MacMillan International incorporating
The Clan MacMillan Society (1892) in 2005 - and as such is responsible
for Clan MacMillan events and membership in the British Isles, operating here as
"Clan MacMillan in the UK".
Clan
MacMillan International is administered by a Board of International Trustees
appointed by the Clan MacMillan Conclave - a meeting of
representatives of all the branches and societies, and other "Elders"
of the clan - and its responsibilities include overseeing the work of the
Committee responsible for the running of the Clan MacMillan Centre.
All Clan MacMillan branches and societies
operate as autonomous bodies, but in return for official recognition by the
chief are expected to adhere to the Mission Statement agreed by the Clan
MacMillan Conclave of 2000:
The mission of each Clan MacMillan organization is to be part of the world-wide family (by birth marriage, adoption, or interest), loyal to our Chief and supportive of the Clan Centre, researching, communicating, and celebrating the story and heritage of Clan MacMillan. We seek to work among ourselves and with others in the spirit of our motto "Miseris succurrere disco".
Most branches and societies voluntarily contribute a sum of money, in
proportion to the size of their membership, to help fund the work of the Clan
Centre - in response to the "Conclave Challenge" of 2000. Also agreed
in 2000 were guidelines for the setting-up and running of new Clan
MacMillan societies and branches (see Guidelines for Societies on side bar), and these continue to
proliferate in the USA and Canada - as the full listing of societies on the side
bar shows. Please click the names of individual bodies there for more
information about them.
