The Clan MacMillan Society,
founded in 1892, was presided over by an elected "Chief" until
1952 when the Society's bard, the Rev. Somerled MacMillan, proved that
Lt.General Sir Gordon Holmes Alexander MacMillan was the rightful
hereditary chief, with the title of MacMillan of MacMillan & Knap.
Inspired by the leadership of their new chief - and since 1986 of his son
and successor George - new Clan MacMillan Societies sprang up overseas so
the original became The Clan MacMillan Society (of Scotland).
The founding in the 1990s of the Clan MacMillan International Centre
and of its "Friends" organisation led to some duplication of
clan efforts in the UK, so in 2005 The Society opted to merge with the
Clan Centre body to create
CLAN MACMILLAN INTERNATIONAL incorporating The Clan MacMillan Society
(1892).
This is now the Clan MacMillan membership organisation for UK and European
clan members,
along with other overseas members who don't have a national or local body
- or who wish to support the Clan Centre and to keep in touch with the
activities of the clan in the rest of the world.
